Seasonal Espresso - Los Naranjos - Colombia
This coffee gives a lovely balanced and smooth cup with notes of Vanilla, Toffee and Tropical fruits.
From San Agustín in southern Huila, Los Naranjos is a community coffee built around the work of smallholder producers in one of Colombia's best-known specialty-coffee regions. The area sits close to the Colombian Massif, with volcanic-influenced soils and abundant water sources helping create excellent conditions for coffee production.
The Los Naranjos name was established in 2006 with coffees from producers around Llanada Naranjos. The aim was to separate and showcase the quality being produced in the area rather than allowing these coffees to disappear anonymously into larger regional blends. Over time, more producers have contributed to Los Naranjos and quality at both farm and cup level has continued to develop.
Many of the producers here are smallholders and second- or third-generation coffee farmers. Caravela supports producers in the region through its PECA agricultural programme, providing practical farm-level assistance around areas such as harvest management, farm practices and pest control.
In the cup
Los Naranjos is the kind of Colombian coffee we love for espresso: sweet, balanced and approachable while still having plenty of fruit and acidity.
Across current examples of this Caravela regional coffee, the profile centres around juicy fruit and citrus alongside deeper caramel/chocolate sweetness.
